The Weekender: BREAKING NEWS
Three stories, perfectly packed for your weekend. Today's edition: a quiet life well lived, why liberals are sad, and an insider's look at Iran's attack on Israel.
Meet The Weekender, a weekend digest that highlights just three reads from the week and why they’re worth your time.
I consume news at the speed-of-a-week.
In the every-moment-information-is-instantly-available-routine we have all come to expect this often means I’m several news stories behind for several hours, if not days. But stories take time to develop, and do I really need to know right now that a celebrity died, that Iran attacked Israel, that Trump is leading in the polls, or that Biden tripped over yet another sandbag? Now that everything is breaking news the only thing that seems to be breaking is us.
Our capacity to process, to slow down, to contextualize, to wait, to listen, to wonder is shattered.
Our first two stories press on this theme from very different angles. In the first, a man reflects on the quiet legacy of his grandfather and the value of a life well lived. In the second, a well-known journalist wonders why Liberals are generally less happy than Conservatives. (Hint: politics has something to do with it)
The final story of the week takes a different turn. It’s the careful, thought-through type of analysis I’ve come to respect in this world of flashing headlines that belie article after article filled with absolutely nothing of substance. It’s on the shadow war in the Middle East, the one that’s been waged by Iran for the past 40 years, how it’s finally coming to light and what it means for the future of Israel, Palestine, and the region.
